Anoke is growing and learning by the seconds...
He can now say his name, "AnoTAH" and he constantly says, "Thank You!" and "Please". He's able to read letters and will point to the letter "M" and say, "emmmmmm" or point to the letter "P" and say "Puhhh"; this continues with associations of words and things: "M" is for "Mama" or "P" is for "penguin" and he'll point to Mama with one hand while the other hand holds the plastic letter M or he'll poin to his penguin bathtoy while the other hand holds the plastic letter P. With the exception of a few letters, he knows the alphabet. Every word that he can say in English he can also say in Spanish. He'll point to mouth and say, "mouth" and "boca"; he'll point to his eyes and say, "eyes" and "ojos".
He's also making rudimentary sentences by adding words (and still sign language) together: "more" "milk" "please". "no" "bottle" "eat" "mandarina" "yes". or "dvd" "train" "yes" ("yes" is often followed by a couple of very clear head nods). Other than interpreting his toddler accent (which I have created a mental key and will gladly share with anyone who's interested), it's really easy to understand what Anoke wants and wants to say. He has no problem expressing himself and making himself understood. And yes, that includes the 2 minute terrible 2 tantrum, now and then.
He understands everything and anticipates things that have become habit. A block before we reach the house that we walk by every day that has When we walk the golden retreiver in the window, Anoke will say, "dog" and make the barking sound of a dog. Before we reach the bridge that the train goes under, he'll point and say, "train". Anoke says and understands concepts of opposites like "hot" and "cold", "up" and "down", "inside" and "outside".
He's incredibly emapthetic and I'd never thought he would live up to the meaning of his name: the actor. He'll look at a book with a picture of a baby crying and pretend to be the baby crying or a picture of a boy laughing and he'll pretend to be the boy laughing. Although it's typical of toddlers this age to imitate everything they see and hear, Anoke seems to have an exceptional gift for this. If Anoke witnesses me coughing with my hand over my mouth, he'll immediately copy not only the sound, but also the gesture and then give me little smile like a wink and a knowing glance.
Anoke can turn on the stereo, tv, turn dornknobs and open and close doors, turn the faucet on, wash his hands and turn the faucet off, open and close the fridge, point to what he wants to eat, tell you when he's finished eating or wants more of something, build towers, solve puzzles, name animals and vehicles, play on his own or with friends, run, dance, climb, do yoga (he knows and can do every pose from the Yoga for Kids dvd, including making a long resonating "ommmmm" sound, talk on the phone, answer the phone, brush his teeth, comb his hair, wave goodbye, say, "hi!", pull off his socks, pull off his hat and sweatshirt, and....use the potty. I showed him the potty and he used it. It was that easy. Now, when he pees or poos, he tells me and if we have enough time, we rush to the potty and he does what he needs to. This is followed by toiletpaper, flushing the contents down the toilet and washing his hands.
Anoke is the size of a two year old and wears clothes labelled 2T (2 Toddler). His shoe size is a 7 and his height and weight are still above average. I'm constantly being told by other parents that he's big for his age. Today at preschool I finally agreed when I saw him standing as tall as some two year olds. Even though he's only 4 months away, in toddler time, that's a lot.
Anoke has a personality that I absolutely adore. He's silly and loud, hillarious and clever. I never thought a 20 month old could be so funny....intentionally funny. He cracks his own jokes and will literally wink or smile or laugh when he's done.
I'm amazed by everything he does. Each day there's something new. Each day I clapp a loud and supporting "Bravo!".
